Pack Your Bags

Something weird was going on.

Very weird.

Dad was usually home and helped me with my homework. I was counting on his help with the poster assignment.

“Where’s Dad?” I asked at dinner.

“Sometimes a really sick patient comes in and it takes more time,” Mom explained. “Or perhaps he’s straightening up the waiting room. The little ones can sure make a mess of the magazines.”

“Can I run next door and check?” I asked. “Maybe he’ll let me help clean up.”

“Sure, Chan. And tell him dinner’s getting cold.”

Dad once paid me three dollars for straightening up the magazines in the waiting room. I could really use the money right now. I’d decided to buy Nana a new turquoise ring. It was the least I could do after losing the other one.

But I had no idea where I could find a turquoise ring in Greenville. I thought about digging for turquoise in my backyard. Maybe I’d get lucky. But one thing was for sure: I would never dig for anything at school ever again!

As I opened the door to Dad’s office, I could hear him on the phone with someone. “That’s wonderful news!” he said. “Congratulations to both of you! We’ll be in touch soon.”

What good news? I sure don’t know of any.

“Hey, Chan, what a surprise,” Dad smiled. “Are you here for a checkup?”

“No way!” I said, giggling. “I thought I’d come over and see if you needed any help. Oh yeah, and Mom said dinner’s getting cold.”

“Hmm. I don’t think I need any help at the moment, but thanks for offering,” Dad said. “By any chance, are you trying to raise money for something?”

Double darn it! Dad knew me too well. I didn’t want to tell him the whole story of why I needed money, but I had no choice. As Dad finished cleaning, I told him about the whole nightmare. I started with the dig disaster and ended with the loss of Nana’s ring.

“That’s too bad,” said Dad. “But at least you were honest with her. Even when it’s hard, it’s really important to tell the truth. On second thought, I’m sure there are a few odd jobs that your mom or I can find for you. You can always help wash the dinner dishes, and perhaps you can make sure to keep your room clean each day. That way I can pay you your full allowance and not just half of it.”

Ugh. Drying dishes was my least favorite chore ever. But I knew I needed the money and that Mom could use my help—especially after a long day of teaching. And I guess Dad’s right about my room, even though I hate to admit it. My bed would probably look a lot neater if I made it up every morning.

“Thanks, Dad, I’ll try to do both of those things. I’ll also have plenty of time to help on Saturdays if you need me. I’m sure Cooper and Maddy won’t ever ask me to hang out with them again. I kind of embarrassed them at school today.
